Creative Edge Carpet Binding

“Had it not been for the $1,000 Start-Ups Program I might still
be running my business from home.”

“… pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people
can’t take their eyes off of you.”

~ Maya Angelou

These wise words from Maya Angelou are quite fitting for Alexis Buchanan, a 2022 Graduate of $1,000 Start-Ups and the owner of Creative Edge Carpet Binding in Fernandina Beach. Lexi has turned her passion for sustainability into a thriving business that is filling a gap in the market.

In May 2021, Lexi began repairing and remaking rugs in the 2 bedroom apartment she shared with her 3-year old daughter. The idea had grown out of her work at a family-owned upholstery business.

“The Rowlands were doing carpet binding occasionally in their home at the request of customers of their upholstery business. It became too labor intensive while also running their full time business, so they supported the idea of me starting a business dedicated to carpet repair and binding. I am super passionate about reducing waste through recycling and reuse, so with their encouragement I went for it.”

While Lexi knew her trade, she was far less confident in her ability to run a business. During that first year she was introduced to $1,000 Start-Ups by Xylina Green who had graduated from the 2021 program and was operating her own small business, Island Personal Chefs, LLC. Realizing she had a lot yet to learn, Lexi enrolled.

When classes began, Lexi felt immediately supported, making connections in the Cohort, feeling motivated and discovering a network of tools and resources to help grow her business. While she gained a great deal of information and knowledge from the course and the other participants, she was also able to share her own experiences in business to support others just starting out.

“The $1,000 we received to get started was nice, but the network of support and the resources are priceless. There was a lot of give and take, we learned so much from each other’s experiences as well as from the curriculum.”

Caring for her 3-year old and starting a small business had its challenges. Lexi found the program to be very family friendly which made committing to the classes and assignments possible. She credits the Cohort model for keeping her and the other participants feeling supported and accountable.

After six months of working on rugs that were often bigger than her apartment workspace, she knew she would eventually need a commercial space. With the limited spaces available and high-priced rents, it took her 2 years to find a space that was both functionally appropriate and affordable.

In April 2024, Creative Edge Carpet Binding found it’s new home at 528 S 8th St, Unit 5 on Amelia Island. Lexi is now serving customers throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, and even as far away as New Orleans.

“Had it not been for the $1,000 Start-Ups Program I might still be running my business from home. I would likely be a lot smaller without the marketing knowledge or the finance knowledge, or the guidance in building a business plan and all the things I learned through the program.”

Lexi advises anyone with even an idea for a business to join $1,000 Start-Ups to help find the right focus and path for their business and to run more efficiently from the start, saving time and money. She credits $1,000 Start-Ups for giving people a way to become self-sufficient and financially independent.

“There are not many resources like this one here. Yet, there is a large community of people who are underprivileged, underfunded, and under-represented, that really need this. I think it’s making a big difference.”

As Xylina did for her, Lexi has recommended friends to join the program and is seeing their businesses grow and thrive with the education and support. The $1,000 Start-Ups Consortium serves as an ongoing network to keep former, current, and future cohort members and other small businesses connected through events and discussion groups.

Creative Edge Carpet Binding is thriving in its new location, where Lexi has plenty of workspace, equipment, and space for a retail shop where she will soon offer rugs made from remnants and repurposed carpets. While still working on her own, she expects to hire a crew in the future.
